Autophagy LC3 lipidation · membrane tag

When the cell eats part of itself, it first needs a membrane tag. A ubiquitin-like cascade ligates LC3 onto the lipid PE — the same activate→conjugate logic as ubiquitin, but the acceptor is a membrane lipid. Layer 2 of three — pick a machine. Real crystal coordinates (RCSB PDB).

The four machines

⤷ A ubiquitin-like cascade aimed at a lipid: ATG4B primes LC3, ATG7 activates, ATG3 relays, and ATG12–ATG5 ligates it onto PE.
