This page is a map
No hydride, Q-cycle, O₂ cleavage, or ATP condensation is animated here. Those events live on the complex pages. Click a 3D complex (or the Q-pool marker for SDH) to open its page. Map steps do not play chemistry.Source: educational map — chemiosmotic chain: Mitchell, Nature 1961 (PMID:13705192) · complex pages linked below

Setup — four crystals in electron-flow order
I (4HEA, blue) · III (1BGY, orange) · IV (1OCC, purple) · V (1BMF, green) laid left → right in electron-flow teaching order — not inner-membrane distances or orientations. Empty pockets. Complex II is not in the row.Source: PDB 4HEA · 1BGY · 1OCC · 1BMF — educational spacing, not a cellular supercomplex

Complex I takes NADH
NADH:ubiquinone oxidoreductase, EC 7.1.1.2. Frame 4HEA (Baradaran et al., Nature 2013). Mechanism: etcc1.html.Source: PDB 4HEA (Baradaran et al. 2013, Nature) · EC 7.1.1.2

Q pool — Complex II side door
[schematic] Teaching pin only. Ubiquinone is dissolved throughout the inner membrane, not a single molecule parked between I and III. Complex II = succinate dehydrogenase (SDH). FADH₂ → Q, no H⁺ pump. Open sdh.html. No CII mesh in this scene.Source: PDB 1ZOY (PMID:15989954) · SDH page sdh.html · Q-pool marker = registered schematic, no Å claimed

Complex III Q-cycle

Complex IV reduces O₂
Cytochrome c oxidase, EC 7.1.1.9. Frame 1OCC (Tsukihara et al., Science 1996). Mechanism: etcc4.html.Source: PDB 1OCC (Tsukihara et al. 1996, Science) · EC 7.1.1.9

Complex V makes ATP
ATP synthase, EC 7.1.2.2. Frame 1BMF F₁ (Abrahams/Walker, Nature 1994). Mechanism: etcc5.html.Source: PDB 1BMF (Abrahams et al. 1994, Nature 370:621) · EC 7.1.2.2
Legend & Fidelity
-
Mechanism fidelity — measured vs. inferred
Measured: four protein Cα traces and their deposited cofactors after layout normalization (centroid + uniform radius + even spacing — educational map, not a cellular supercomplex). Inferred: the Q-pool schematic marker. No Å is claimed for that marker. The caption equation NADH + O₂ + ADP + Pi → NAD⁺ + H₂O + ATP is a teaching sum: it omits H⁺ stoichiometry, the QH₂ path, and the Complex II branch.Source: layout = registered schematic; crystals as cited on the Setup card; Q-pool = no Å
-
Why is Complex II missing from the 3D row?
SDH is already a TCA simulator (sdh.html). This map links it; it does not duplicate the mesh.Source: PDB 1ZOY · page sdh.html
-
The protein mesh is static
No ISP domain swing, membrane-arm pumping helices, or F₀ rotation. Those motions, if shown, belong on the complex pages as [schematic] / PROPOSAL.
-
Physiological regulation
Rotenone (CI), antimycin A (CIII), cyanide/CO (CIV), oligomycin (CV) are named, not bound. Organism mix: 4HEA is bacterial; 1BGY/1OCC/1BMF are bovine.
-
Kinetics scope
This tool shows one map of one catalytic chain, not timecourses or P/O ratios. Textbook ~2.5 ATP / NADH and ~1.5 ATP / FADH₂ (chemiosmotic; Mitchell 1961, PMID:13705192) are compiled literature approximations — they change with c-ring stoichiometry, leak, and tissue, and are not this simulator’s output. Pair with a kinetics chapter.
